Smart Trnava: The First Fully Integrated Intelligent Traffic Management System in Slovakia

Trnava has deployed advanced traffic technologies – from adaptive controllers to AI video analytics, all integrated within a unified platform that makes real-time decisions on where and how to adjust traffic flow.
The result is a faster, better-coordinated city transit, smoother operation, and reliable data that the city can use for future mobility planning.

Why the project was created

Before the project, Trnava faced daily traffic congestion on its main routes. The city aimed to improve traffic flow without structural changes – the solution was integration of all technologies into a single data-driven platform, enabling dynamic and adaptive traffic management.

How the system works

The “brain” of the system is the Invipo integration platform, which:

  • displays and evaluates data (visualizations, dashboards, analytics),
  • detects unusual situations and provides operators with tools for instant response,
  • triggers pre-defined scenarios for incidents or special events,
  • monitors traffic performance and the efficiency of changes,
  • publishes traffic information (LED panels, public portal, mobile app),
  • provides access to data through an Open Data API.

Integrated technologies

  • Adaptive intersection controllers: adjust signal timing to current traffic conditions, coordinate main routes, balance side streets, and react to congestion changes.
  • Travel time monitoring (floating car data): tracks anonymous vehicle movement between points to calculate current travel times, helping reduce queues and route traffic efficiently.
  • LED panels (VMS): display fastest routes, restrictions, and warnings, automatically updated in real time.
  • Video analytics (AI): recognizes vehicle counts, categories, and movement directions.
  • Meteo & road-weather stations: monitor road surface condition, temperature, humidity, precipitation, and visibility; trigger driver alerts in low-traction conditions.
  • Public portal & Open Data: transparent information available to citizens and professionals.

Traffic results

  • Coordinated travel along the main corridor shortened by up to 4 minutes during peak hours,
  • Throughput of key intersections increased by up to +8.9%,
  • Queues up to 950 m dissolved within 1 rush hour,
  • Intersection response time shortened by more than 10 minutes,
  • Average driver in Trnava saves up to 16 hours per year in rush hours.

Environmental impact

  • fuel savings: up to 17,000 litres per year,
  • CO₂ reduction: more than 40 tons per month,
  • PM₁₀ reduction: approx. 1.6 tons per year, thanks to shorter idling times and smoother acceleration.

System performance

  • 60+ million video detections per year,
  • 45 million processed travel-time records annually,
  • over 1 million data inputs daily,
  • up to 850 automatic LED board updates per day.

Recognition and awards

“Implementing modern technologies in traffic management is the fastest way to improve traffic flow. At the same time, it provides valuable, relevant data for better decision-making.” — Peter Bročka, Mayor of Trnava.
